Jubilee Year of Mercy

In early 2015, Pope Francis announced that 2016 would be the Year of Mercy. But what exactly does it mean to be “merciful”?

The Corporal Works of Mercy

The simplest way to discover mercy is to look at the actions of Jesus Christ. Known as the Corporal Works of Mercy, these actions are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat others. The Bible verse Matthew 25:40 points out that we must all treat others like they are Christ in disguise: “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”

Some examples you can do in your community include:

  1. Feed the hungry
  2. Give drink to the thirsty
  3. Shelter the homeless
  4. Visit the sick
  5. Visit the prisoners
  6. Comfort those grieving
  7. Donate to the poor

The Spiritual Works of Mercy

The Spiritual Works of Mercy have long been a part of the Christian tradition, appearing in the works of theologians and spiritual writers throughout history.  While Corporal Works of Mercy focus mainly on providing physical needs, Spiritual Works of Mercy aid in cultivating the soul.

Examples:

  1. Counsel the doubtful
  2. Instruct the ignorant
  3. Admonish the sinner
  4. Comfort the sorrowful
  5. Forgive injuries and grudges
  6. Do not be bitter
  7. Pray for the living and the dead

These are just a few examples of what you can do to celebrate the Jubilee Year of Mercy. For more information please visit this website, the USCCB.
